Biwako Biennale 2022 with an art curator

2-Day Customizable Trip : Omihachiman, Biwa Lake, Hikone, Otsu

From ~ JPY75,000/pers. (USD690) based on double occupancy in 3*** machiya

In Japanese, there’s the expression geijutsu no aki (芸術の秋), or “autumn is for the arts” (literally, “autumn of the arts”).

The Biwako Biennale is an international art exhibition that began in 2001, in a bid to preserve traditional Japanese merchant houses and buildings.

This year the Biwako Biennale will be in October and November 2022 (TBC).

It is a rare art event that highlights the beauty of old Japanese houses, where contemporary art pieces accent spaces that people occupied in the olden days.

You will get to enjoy the fusion of Japanese-style architecture with contemporary art.

Sample Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Kyoto or Osaka /Omihachiman

In the morning, your guide will pick you up at your hotel or station.

Depending on either you are in Kyoto or Osaka the limited express trains will take you to Omihachiman in about 40min to 1h.

You will drop your luggage at your machiya, 5 mins away by taxi from the station.

Omihachiman had been a developed commercial town even since the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573) and gathered many merchants in the last part of 16th century.

Former merchant’s residences and a canal used for transport are preserved in an old city area, designated an Important Cultural Landscape.

Then start your visit. Your guide will lead you through the Biennale’s many collections, comprising works by some 80 artists from here and abroad. He will be able to answer any questions that you may have and help you discover Omihachiman and Lake Biwa.

Overnight at your 3*** machiya.
Machiya Inn or equivalent.

Day 2: Omihachiman/Kyoto or Osaka

In the morning, you will experience on your own the long history of the Lake Biwa, and the everyday lifestyles and culture of the people who live around.

The name Biwako was established in the Edo period. There are various theories about the origin of the name Biwako, but it is generally believed to be so named because of the resemblance of its shape to that of a stringed instrument called the biwa.

We will suggest the Michigan Cruise, that offer ways to enjoy seasonal natural beauty.

Otsu, home to a great many historical sites, not least of which is the World Heritage Site Enryaku-ji Temple. Or Hikone, famous for its castle, one of only four castles in Japan designated as national treasures.
