As summer season shifts into high gear there’s no better time to hit the road and explore Shizuoka.
Shizuoka Prefecture is a popular urbanite retreat situated midway between Tokyo and Nagoya, in which you can follow in the footsteps of travelers along Ancient Tokaido Road.
It captures the wonders of Japan from the mountains to the sea! The finest seafood, exquisite teas and the majestic Mount Fuji.
A 100% customizable tour idea by Yoko.
Take the shinkansen (about 1h30) to Fujieda-shi station, where the driver will be waiting, holding a sign with your name on it.
You will start the day with a visit of the mysterious Aokigahara Forest, sometimes referred to as the most popular site for suicide in Japan.
Known as Jukai (Sea of Trees), Suicide Forest phenomenon really started in the 1960’s with the story of an unfulfilled love, in the book Tower of Waves by Seicho Matsumoto. Many legends surround this forest, and some believe it to be haunted because of its tragic history as a suicide spot
If you are not claustrophobic, the visit can continue with the visit of the Narusawa ice cave, a 20m-deep ice cave formed by lava from Mount Fuji long used as a natural refrigerator
You will then learn to fly…paragliding! And get some of the best views of Mount Fuji from the grasslands of Asagiri-kogen.
The tour will continue with the Shiraito Falls “the waterfall of white thread”, ranked among “Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls”, 200m-wide and 20m-high arc-shaped cliff with its hundreds of large and small waterfalls falling like many silk strings.
You will pay a visit to the Fuji-san Hongu Sengen Taisha, the head of all Fuji-worshipping shrines, which was the preferred starting point to climb Mount Fuji. From a good angle it’s actually possible to frame Fujisan within its torii (sacred gate), the largest wooden torii in Japan.
Your driver will drop you off at your hotel, ideally located at the foot of the Nihondaira Plateau which enjoys stunning views of Mount Fuji, the Pacific, and the surrounding vast green tea plantations.
Overnight at your 3*** hotel.
Nippondaira Hotel or equivalent.
In the morning, your driver will pick you up at your hotel, to take you to one of the tea farms in the area.
If tea and rice are a part of everyday Japanese life, the future could be different. More and more tea farmers are giving up the craft of tea pruducing, because of falling market demand and decreasing prices of tea.
We are proud to collaborate with the association “Tea Change Project (Cha-ji-hen)”, which aim tohelp more people enjoy tea in their everyday lives and in different places, and pass on the tea making culture and way of life to the generations that come after us.
You will look at Japanese tea production and discuss processing methods for some of the most common Japanese teas.
You will then savour tea in open air tea terraces overlooking tea fields and Mount Fuji in different parts of Shizuoka.
Before going back to your hotel, your driver will take you for a final photo of Mount Fuji at Miho no Matsubara Beach. Registered as a part of Mount Fuji’s world heritage site in 2013, the green pine forest and the blue ocean, along with Fujisan, have been expressed through various drawings such as Hiroshige Utagawa’s ukiyoe, as well as waka poems..
You will end the day at Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, the first shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the unifier of Japan and the first great lord of the Edo era (1603 – 1868).
