SAMPLE ROUTE
This is a sample route - every stop, duration and experience is adapted to you.
Yōkoso - welcome to Japan. After clearing customs and immigration, a private car transfers you into the city, and your first day is yours to settle in at your own pace.
Mark the occasion with one of Tokyo's great meals - a multi-course kaiseki or an omakase sushi counter - or follow our food-obsessed guide on an early-evening izakaya crawl, hopping between small-plate counters and sake.
A huge, fascinating metropolis that sets high-tech visions of the future beside glimpses of old Japan. The headline sights - Asakusa, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, the Meiji Shrine - are worth it, but Tokyo's real charm is more discreet: the maze of streets behind the main ones, with a village feel, clean-design shops and small bars far from urban life.
The highlight of spring here is unmistakable - the cherry blossom and wisteria season, a must-see when visiting Japan at this time of year.
Another day among the blossoms - this time the multi-layered yaezakura late cherries and cascading wisteria, as Tokyo turns into a pink-and-white wonderland.
Join Tokyoites welcoming spring at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, Shinjuku Gyoen, Haijima Park or Koishikawa Korakuen - or choose from our curated Tokyo experiences for the day.
Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and on to Ashikaga Flower Park, famous for its Great Wisteria - over 150 years old and spreading across nearly 1,000 square metres.
Continue to Nikko, gateway to Nikko National Park, most famous for the World Heritage Toshogu Shrine and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, first shogun of his line - alongside the Shinkyo sacred bridge and the Rinnoji temple complex. The area is also rich in onsen, from lively resort towns to secluded rustic villages.
On to Matsushima - one of Japan's Three Great Sights alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate, a bay so beautiful it left the great haiku poet Bashō speechless. Over 200 pine-clad islands dot the water; step off the shore for a private cruise and an all-you-can-eat oyster feast.
Two temples are unmissable: Zuiganji, one of Tohoku's most important Zen temples and a National Treasure, and Entsuin, rich with Matsushima's samurai history and decorated in gold leaf and ornate painting.
Journey to Morioka by way of the World Heritage site of Hiraizumi. Wander the sacred grounds of Chuson-ji, founded in 850, hidden among giant cedars - famous for its Konjikido, the Golden Hall entirely covered in gold leaf.
If timing aligns, the Kitakami Tenshochi cherry blossom festival - one of Tohoku's top three - coincides with Children's Day on 5 May, when some 300 koinobori carp streamers swim above the Kitakami River. In Morioka, try wanko soba, the fun Iwate tradition of small, endlessly refilled bowls of noodles.
Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori, then Hirosaki Park - among the finest cherry blossom sights in all Japan, home to over 2,600 trees of more than 52 varieties, some over 300 years old. For something rarer, view the blossom from a boat drifting through a petal-covered moat.
Continue by shinkansen beneath the Tsugaru Channel to Hakodate, where the star-shaped, moated Goryokaku is one of Hokkaido's best blossom spots - and most magical after sunset, when evening illuminations light the fort.
Begin at the lively Hakodate Asaichi morning market - a foodie's heaven of around 250 stalls, from fresh crab, sea urchin and salmon roe to Hokkaido produce. Then Onuma Quasi-National Park, shaped by the eruptions of active Mount Komagatake, its spring shores lined with cherry blossom and popular with birdwatchers.
On to Lake Toya, known for its caldera scenery and the exquisite contrast of cherry and plum blossom.
Start at Jigokudani - "Hell Valley" - an active geothermal field where volcanic gases hiss from bleached rock and the smell of sulphur, white smoke and steaming springs create a genuinely hellish landscape. Then discover indigenous heritage at the Upopoy National Ainu Museum, celebrating Hokkaido's native culture.
On to Sapporo and Susukino, the largest entertainment district north of Tokyo - Hokkaido's famous Genghis Khan grilled lamb or a steaming bowl of miso ramen, and the historic red-brick Sapporo Beer Garden.
To Otaru, a leading port city of the late 19th century. Wander Sakaimachi, a preserved merchant street of crafts, glassware, music boxes and sweets, and the charming Otaru Canal, lined with stone warehouses - a boat ride optional. Then the Shakotan Peninsula, famed for its blue waters and rugged rock formations like Ebisu Iwa and Daikoku Iwa, named for the deities of fishermen and of wealth.
For whisky lovers, the Nikka Yoichi Distillery is essential - opened in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky.
Depending on your departure time, a final wander through Sapporo's markets - from the bustling Nijo Market with Hokkaido's freshest seafood to neighbourhood markets of artisanal crafts and regional specialities.
Private car transfer to New Chitose Airport for your flight onward.
