Ise Shima Private Tour: The Land of Jingu and the Gods

Mie Prefecture’s Ise-Shima region is referred to as “beautiful land”

Located in central Japan’s Mie Prefecture, Ise-Shima (志摩半島) or Shima Peninsula is best known for Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine), Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrine, that the Japanese adore as the “Soul of Japan”.

The shrine, dating back to the 3rd century, is dedicated to the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu-Omikami, who is considered a founder of the Japanese nation and a direct blood relation of the Imperial Family. It is considered to be the spiritual home of the Japanese and its national religion Shinto.

Surrounding Ise, is the Ise-Shima National Park, beautiful coastal landscapes characterized by ria, which are ancient river valleys now submerged under oceanic bays.

From the 7th to 12th centuries, the region provided fish and shellfish to the imperial court. Even today the area is famous for its supply of fresh seafood to Ise Jingu.
