Tokyo Sumo Morning Training — Beyond the Ring
Rikishi Insider
What you’ll see & do
Sumo (相撲) dates back over 1,500 years. Ancient wall paintings suggest it was performed in prehistoric times as agricultural ritual for the kami (gods) — and the sport still carries that ceremonial weight today, in the rituals that open each training session and the strict hierarchy of the stable.
You arrive early in the morning at a working Tokyo sumo stable where training takes place daily. From a designated viewing area, you quietly observe practice — warm-ups, drills, bouts — without interrupting the wrestlers’ routine. Those who select the optional guide receive deeper context about the rituals and the inner workings of stable life. Those who attend independently experience the session on its own terms.
The exact meeting point is confirmed after booking. Guests must follow all stable rules, which are provided in full at confirmation.
