The Best of Nikko — Shrines, Waterfalls & Mountain Scenery

Nikko wo mimizushite “kekkō” to iu na. as “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko”.

Nikkō (日光) is a small mountain town north of Tokyo, at the entrance to Nikko National Park. It is most famous for the Tosho-gu Shrine complex — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, the most powerful samurai dynasty in Japanese history.

Ieyasu’s grandson kept power for 250 years after his death, and the extraordinary shrine complex built in his honour is Japan’s most lavishly decorated — a riot of gold leaf, carved lacquer and painted animals in deep cedar forest.

Beyond the shrines, Nikko National Park rewards visitors with some of Japan’s finest mountain scenery — the dramatic Kegon Falls, the tranquil shores of Lake Chuzenji, the autumn-lit twin cascades of Ryuzu Falls, and the quietly atmospheric forested gorge of Kanmangafuchi. The city also has a long onsen tradition, with ryokan offering outdoor baths surrounded by mountain scenery.

If you’re visiting Japan in autumn, Nikko is one of the most beautiful places to go!
