The must-see attractions in Nikko

Nikko wo mimizushite “kekkō” to iu na. as “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko”.

Nikkō (日光) is a small town North of Tokyo at the entrance of Nikko National Park, most famous for World Heritage Site Toshogu Shrine and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, the first shogun of a long line.

It was him who unified the country and his heirs kept power for 250 years after his death.

The main places to visit in Nikko

  • Nikko Toshogu Shrine – A UNESCO World Heritage site and the most lavishly decorated shrine in Japan. It’s a complex of ornate structures dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
  • Taiyuinbyo Shrine – The mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the grandson of Ieyasu. It rivals Toshogu in beauty and offers a serene atmosphere.
  • Rinnoji Temple – The most important temple in Nikko, housing three large wooden Buddha statues.
  • Shinkyo Bridge – A sacred bridge that marks the entrance to the shrines and temples of Nikko. It’s particularly beautiful when surrounded by autumn foliage.
  • Kegon Falls – One of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls, with a dramatic drop of 97 meters.
  • Lake Chuzenji – A scenic lake located in the mountains above Nikko. It’s a popular spot for boating, hiking, and enjoying the autumn colors.
  • Ryuzu Falls – Another beautiful waterfall in Nikko, known for its twin cascades that resemble the head of a dragon.
  • Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura – A theme park that recreates the atmosphere of the Edo period. Visitors can dress up in traditional costumes and experience various aspects of Edo culture.
  • Kanmangafuchi Abyss –  Aserene and mystical gorge located a short distance from the main shrine and temple area of Nikko. A peaceful escape from the crowds.
  • The Tamozawa Imperial Villa – Nestled in the serene landscapes of Nikko, the villa is a captivating glimpse into the lives of Japan’s imperial family.
