Takayama (高山) sits in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, three hours by train from Nagoya – remote enough that it was effectively isolated for centuries, which is precisely why so much of it survives. The Sanmachi Suji merchant district is one of the best-preserved Edo-period streetscapes in Japan: dark timber facades, sake breweries marked by cedar balls above the door, lacquerware and Hida beef shops lining the narrow lanes.
Hida-Furukawa, thirty minutes north, is quieter still – white-walled kura storehouses above the Seto River canal, carp visible in the water below, a town most foreign visitors have never heard of. Shirakawa-go’s thatched farmhouses close the day. The itinerary adapts to your pace and the season.
