The Best of Kamakura — Temples, Shrines & the Great Buddha

Kamakura (鎌倉) is one of Japan’s most rewarding day trips — a coastal city of extraordinary historical and spiritual depth, home to 65 Buddhist temples and 19 Shinto shrines. Its iconic Great Buddha, Kotoku-in, cast in bronze and standing over 13 metres tall, has watched over the city since the 13th century.

The city flourished after warlord Minamoto Yoritomo established his government here in 1192, making Kamakura the political capital of Japan during the Kamakura Shogunate (1181–1333). It was also where Japanese Zen Buddhism first took root, and where the Nichiren school of Buddhism was founded.

Thanks to this exceptional heritage, Kamakura ranks second only to Kyoto for the number of major historical temples — and unlike Kyoto, it remains a charming seaside town where you can move between ancient shrines and ocean views in the same afternoon.

A visit to the Kamakura area can easily fill up a whole day with the amount of sights to see, but an overnight stay is strongly recommended.
