The Best of Kyoto — Temples, Geisha Districts & Zen Gardens

Kyoto (京都) — literally “Capital City” — was the imperial capital of Japan for over a millennium, and has the reputation of being its most beautiful city. Unlike Tokyo, Kyoto was spared the bombing of the Second World War and never suffered the earthquakes that reshaped other Japanese cities — which is why so much of old Japan survived here.

The city can surprise first-time visitors. The first impression is often of urban sprawl around the ultra-modern glass-and-steel station — a city steeped in tradition colliding with the contemporary world. But the persistent visitor soon discovers Kyoto’s hidden beauty in the temples and parks that ring the city centre, and finds that the hours spent searching for them are themselves part of the experience.

Kyoto is our home — the city from which My Japan Guide designs all its private itineraries across Japan. We know its rhythms intimately: the early morning light at Fushimi Inari before the crowds arrive, the right season for each temple garden, the hidden lanes of Nara and Osaka a short train ride away.

Also Kyoto, as a former capital with a rich history, is a haven for food lovers, boasting a unique and diverse culinary scene.

PLACES TO VISIT

The main attractions in Kyoto

  • Fushimi Inari-taisha — Thousands of vermilion torii gates wind four kilometres through forested hillside in this ancient shrine dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and prosperity.

  • Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) — A Zen temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf, reflected in its surrounding pond in one of Japan’s most iconic compositions.

  • Kiyomizu-dera Temple — A UNESCO World Heritage temple perched on a forested hillside above Kyoto, famous for its vast wooden stage and the sacred Otowa Waterfall below.

  • Arashiyama Bamboo Forest — A towering grove of emerald bamboo where shafts of light filter down onto the path — one of Japan’s most atmospheric natural experiences.

  • Nijo Castle — The former Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shoguns, famous for its spectacular painted interiors, beautiful gardens and “nightingale floors” that squeak underfoot.

  • Gion District — Kyoto’s most celebrated historic quarter — a preserved streetscape of wooden machiya teahouses where geiko and maiko still walk to evening appointments.

  • Nishiki Market — A narrow covered market at the heart of Kyoto, packed with vendors selling pickles, tofu, grilled skewers and every speciality of the Kyoto kitchen.

  • Ryoanji Temple — A Zen temple renowned for its raked rock garden — fifteen stones in white gravel, a minimalist masterpiece that has fascinated visitors for five centuries.

  • Kyoto Imperial Palace — The former residence of Japan’s imperial family for over a millennium, set in spacious parkland with elegant historic architecture open to the public.

  • Philosopher’s Path — A stone-paved canal path lined with hundreds of cherry trees, connecting Nanzenji to Ginkakuji — at its most magical during spring blossom.
