What to expect

Uji (宇治) has been producing tea since the 13th century – longer than any other region in Japan. Wazuka, forty minutes further into the hills, produces around a third of all Uji-brand tea. Its stepped hillside fields – carefully shaded, misty in the early morning – are among the most beautiful agricultural landscapes in Japan and almost completely unknown to foreign visitors.

On this private car tour your guide takes you through Uji’s historic tea district and then into the Wazuka hills for a farm visit, tencha grinding and a properly conducted tea ceremony at the source.

Japan’s finest matcha, where it begins.
