This private tour can be booked as a standalone day or included within a custom Japan itinerary, with hotels, transport, guides, cultural experiences, and local support arranged around your dates.
Kintsugi (金継ぎ) – golden joinery – is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. The philosophy behind it is as significant as the technique: rather than hiding a break, kintsugi makes it visible, treating the repair as part of the object’s history. A repaired bowl is not diminished by its fracture – it is made more interesting by it. This is wabi-sabi: the acceptance of imperfection and impermanence as sources of beauty.
In this private 90-minute workshop in Kyoto, a master craftsman guides you through the full process at your own pace, with one-on-one instruction throughout. No prior art experience is required. You begin with a broken ceramic piece provided in the workshop and leave with a finished, repaired object of your own making.
The work takes 90 minutes. The object lasts a lifetime.
