The Best of Nara — Ancient Temples, Sacred Deer & Hidden Neighbourhoods

Nara (奈良) was Japan’s first fixed capital in the 8th century, under the name Heijo-kyo — a planned imperial city modelled on the Tang Dynasty capital of Chang’an. For 74 years it was the centre of Japanese civilisation, and the extraordinary monuments built during that period survive to this day, earning Nara its status as a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour Kyoto, Nara is frequently omitted from itineraries — which is a mistake. The city preserves its main sights more attractively than Kyoto, concentrated within Nara Park alongside hundreds of freely roaming sacred deer, and in the quiet lanes of Naramachi. Todai-ji alone — the world’s largest wooden structure, housing a 15-metre bronze Buddha — justifies the journey.

Nara’s richness extends beyond the famous Great Buddha and the deer. Ancient mountain trails lead to sacred sites on the surrounding hills, the imperial palace ruins have been partially reconstructed at Heijo, and the old merchant quarter of Naramachi offers one of the most authentic street-level experiences in Kansai.

Nara is easily combined with Osaka or Kyoto in the same day.

But staying overnight lets you discover Nara in the evening as the lanterns come on and the crowds thin, and explore the main sights at dawn — Todai-ji in the early morning light, with only the deer for company, is one of Japan’s most quietly extraordinary experiences.

PLACES TO VISIT

The main attractions in Nara

  • Todai-ji Temple — The world’s largest wooden structure, housing the Daibutsuden Hall of the Great Buddha — a 15-metre bronze statue cast in the 8th century.

  • Nara Park — A vast parkland where hundreds of sacred sika deer roam freely among temples and shrines, making Nara unlike any other city in Japan.

  • Kasuga Grand Shrine — A UNESCO World Heritage Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of bronze hanging lanterns and moss-covered stone lanterns lining its ancient cedar approach.

  • Heijo Palace — The excavated remains of Japan’s 8th-century imperial capital, with a reconstructed ceremonial hall set in open parkland.

  • Kofuku-ji Temple — A temple complex anchored by one of Japan’s tallest five-storey pagodas, its reflection in Sarusawa Pond one of Nara’s most enduring images.

  • Nara National Museum — A superb collection of Buddhist art and artifacts spanning the Nara period to the present, set in elegant Meiji-era and modern buildings.

  • Yoshikien Garden — A tranquil traditional garden with three distinct styles — pond, moss and tea — tucked beside the outer wall of Kasuga Grand Shrine.

  • Nigatsu-do Hall — A wooden hall perched on the hillside above Todai-ji, offering sweeping views over Nara and the city lights below at dusk from its famous veranda.

  • Naramachi — Nara’s beautifully preserved merchant quarter — a network of narrow lanes lined with traditional machiya townhouses, workshops and small galleries.
