Kanazawa — Private Guided Tours & Top Attractions
Where Edo Culture Lives On — Gardens, Geisha Districts & Gold Leaf
Kanazawa (金沢), often called “Little Kyoto,” is one of Japan’s most captivating and under visited cities — a coastal castle town on the Sea of Japan that escaped both wartime bombing and the homogenising forces of rapid modernisation. The result is a city of exceptional historical depth, where geisha districts, samurai lanes, Zen gardens and living craft traditions exist largely intact.
During the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of the Maeda clan — the second most powerful clan in Japan after the Tokugawa, with the largest rice fief in the country. The city grew to become a centre of cultural achievement rivalling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo), and that legacy is visible at every turn: in Kenrokuen, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan; in the Higashi Chaya district, the finest preserved geisha quarter outside Kyoto; and in the extraordinary concentration of traditional crafts — lacquerware, Nishijin-style weaving, Kutani porcelain and above all, gold leaf.
Unlike Kyoto, the city offers a more intimate and authentic experience — and thanks to the Hokuriku Shinkansen, it is now just two and a half hours from Tokyo.
Kanazawa can seamlessly be added to your Japan itinerary as a midway stop between Tokyo and Kyoto.
