The Best of Nagoya — Castles, Shrines & Hidden Neighbourhoods

Nagoya (名古屋市) is Japan’s fourth largest city and one of its most overlooked — a destination that consistently surprises visitors who make the effort to discover it.

Third largest city in Japan, it sits one-and-a-half hours from Tokyo and just over an hour from Osaka, and serves as the gateway to Ise (Mie) and Takayama.

Nagoya Castle — the symbol and pride of the city — was the base of the Tokugawa clan, the ruling dynasty that governed Japan for 250 years. Its legendary golden shachihoko sculptures and the magnificent painted interiors of the reconstructed Honmaru Palace make it one of Japan’s finest castle complexes.

Beyond the castle, Nagoya rewards exploration: Atsuta Jingu is one of the country’s most sacred Shinto shrines; the Osu district pulses with street food and flea markets; the Sky Promenade offers extraordinary night views from Sakae; and the Toyota and SCMAGLEV museums are world-class.

In the evening, the Shikemichi district and its preserved Edo-period merchant houses offer a quieter, more atmospheric side of the city.
