Ise Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮) is not one shrine but a complex of over 125 – the most sacred site in Shinto, dedicated to Amaterasu, the sun goddess and divine ancestor of the Imperial family. The Inner Shrine, Naiku, has been rebuilt every twenty years for over 1,300 years in an act of ritual renewal – the current structure dates from 2013. No photographs are permitted inside the inner sanctuary.
