Nikko Private Car Tour — Tosho-gu, Kegon Falls & Lake Chuzenji
Never Say “Magnificent” Until You’ve Seen Nikko
What you’ll see & do
Nikko wo mizushite kekkō to iu na — “Don’t say magnificent until you’ve seen Nikko.” The Tosho-gu shrine complex, built to house the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu — the shogun who unified Japan — is the most lavishly decorated religious complex in the country. Every surface carved, lacquered, gilded. The famous Sleeping Cat. The three wise monkeys. A cedar avenue planted in 1648, 35 kilometres long.
On this private full-day car tour you move through Nikko‘s two distinct landscapes — the shrine complex in the valley below, and the mountain plateau above, reached by the 48-curve Irohazaka mountain road. Lake Chuzenji sits at 1,269 metres, its surface fed by snowmelt from the surrounding peaks. Kegon Falls drops 97 metres into the gorge below — one of Japan’s three most celebrated waterfalls.
