What to expect

Fukuoka (福岡) was formed in 1889 by the merger of two cities — the port town of Hakata and the old castle town of Fukuoka. Hakata is the older of the two, deeply proud of its temples, its ramen and its summer festival, the Yamakasa. The city is compact, easy to navigate by car, and consistently underestimated by visitors who spend only a day here.
