Mount Aso Private Car Tour — Active Volcano & Caldera from Kumamoto
The Land of Fire
What you’ll see & do
Mount Aso (阿蘇山) is one of the world’s largest active volcanic calderas — the outer rim measures roughly 120 kilometres in circumference, enclosing a flat plain of farms, villages and grasslands inside a ring of mountains. Five central peaks rise from the caldera floor. The most active is Nakadake, whose crater lake has been producing volcanic gas continuously for recorded history. Access to the crater rim is one of the most extraordinary experiences in Japan — and is closed without warning when activity increases.
On this private full-day car tour from Kumamoto your guide takes you through the caldera and its landscapes — Kusasenrigahama, the wide grassland plateau where horses graze against the volcanic skyline, the forest shrine path of Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Jinja, and the Nakadake crater if conditions allow.
Crater access depends entirely on volcanic activity and weather. Your guide monitors conditions and adjusts the itinerary on the day.
