The Best of Takayama – Mountain Sake, Hida Beef Bites & Morning Markets

Takayama (高山市) sits deep in the Hida mountains of Gifu Prefecture – a castle town that was isolated enough from the rest of Japan to develop its own distinct craft traditions, architectural character and food culture, and connected enough to the outside world to grow wealthy from the timber trade. The Tokugawa government took direct control of the city in 1692, and the Takayama Jinya – the only surviving Edo-period government building of its kind in Japan – has stood at its centre ever since.

What makes Takayama unlike anywhere else is the Sanmachi Suji district: three parallel streets of perfectly preserved Edo-period merchant houses, their dark timber facades unchanged since the 18th century.

Sake breweries still operate behind cedar balls hung above the entrance. Lacquerware workshops open their doors to visitors. The morning markets along the Miyagawa river set up before dawn with pickles, vegetables and mountain crafts. The whole place is improbably, almost unfairly, intact.

Takayama is also the natural base for the Hida Folk Village, the thatched-farmhouse settlements of Shirakawa-go, and the start of the Nakasendo trail – all within an hour by bus or car. It connects easily with Kanazawa to the north and Nagoya to the south. Twice a year, in April and October, the city hosts the Takayama Festival – consistently ranked among Japan’s three most beautiful festivals – when the eleven ornate yatai floats are paraded through the old town streets, some equipped with mechanical karakuri puppets that perform to music.

PLACES TO VISIT

The main attractions in Takayama

  • Sanmachi Suji – Three streets of perfectly preserved Edo-period merchant houses in dark timber, home to sake breweries, miso shops, lacquerware craftsmen and the best morning atmosphere in Chubu.

  • Miyagawa Morning Market – A daily riverside market running since the Edo period, selling mountain vegetables, pickles, local crafts and fresh produce along the banks of the Miyagawa.

  • Takayama Jinya – The only surviving Edo-period government outpost in Japan, where the Tokugawa shogunate administered the Hida region – now open as a museum of exceptional historical integrity.

  • Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato) – An open-air museum of 30 traditional gassho-zukuri thatched farmhouses relocated from across the Hida region, set against forested mountain scenery.

  • Sake Breweries – Takayama has eight sake breweries in the old town, all identifiable by the cedar ball (sugidama) above the entrance – many offer tastings and tours.

  • Takayama Festival Floats (Yatai) – Eleven ornate festival floats dating from the 17th century, displayed year-round in the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall – among the finest examples of Edo-period craftsmanship in Japan.

  • Shirakawa-go – A UNESCO World Heritage village of massive gassho-zukuri farmhouses, 50 minutes by bus from Takayama – most spectacular in winter snow.

  • Hida-Furukawa – A smaller, quieter version of Takayama’s old town 15 minutes north by train, with whitewashed kura storehouses along a carp-filled canal, fewer tourists and the same preserved Edo merchant character without the crowds.

  • Higashiyama Walking Course – A quiet temple and shrine trail through the forested hills east of the city, linking thirteen temples and five shrines in an hour-long morning walk.
