Often translated as a nerd or geek in English, Otaku (オタク) originally refers to the people who love Japanese pop culture, anime and Manga.
Since the success of the anime franchise Pokemon in the late 90s, Japanese anime has been enjoying greater popularity and has now swept across the globe. Many young people in other countries grew up with Japan’s anime, and have probably developed an interest in Japan through their love for anime and manga.
Akihabara in Tokyo is a notable attraction center for Otaku. There, you will find dozens of maid cafés featuring waitresses who dress up and act like maids or anime characters, as well as stores specializing in anime, manga, retro video games, figurines, card games and other collectibles.
